Chapter 01
Shaped by Hand
Every piece begins with clay and a pair of hands.
On the wheel, wet clay is centred, opened and drawn upward by touch. The form comes from the pressure of fingers and palms, so no two rise quite the same.

Handcrafted terracotta tableware
Mrittika creates terracotta tableware shaped and carved by artisans in rural Bangladesh, designed for contemporary homes.
Our Story
মৃত্তিকা
mrittika · Bengali · noun
earth; soil; clay
Our name means earth in Bengali. Each bowl and cup is thrown, carved and fired by artisans in rural Bangladesh, then finished and presented as a modern piece for the home.
Craft
Four stages, photographed in the workshop in rural Bangladesh where Mrittika pieces are made.
Chapter 01
Every piece begins with clay and a pair of hands.
On the wheel, wet clay is centred, opened and drawn upward by touch. The form comes from the pressure of fingers and palms, so no two rise quite the same.

Chapter 02
Patterns are worked into the surface one piece at a time.
While the clay is still soft, artisans cut lattices, lines and flowers into each piece by hand. The pattern repeats. The hand that makes it never repeats exactly.

Chapter 03
Rows of vessels fill the workshop as each piece moves through the process.
Cups, pots and lids wait side by side in the open air before firing. Many pieces, and every one of them handled.

Chapter 04
The final transformation reveals the warmth and character of the clay.
Firing turns grey clay into terracotta, Italian for “baked earth”. The carving sharpens, the colour deepens, and the pieces are ready to leave the workshop.
From the workshop to the shelf
Each set is presented in a navy Mrittika box with a fitted insert, so the care taken in the workshop carries through to the shelf.
